Mutation and Mutagens Definitions

چکیده

somatic mutation: a mutation in a somatic cell; somatic mutations produce "mosaic" or "chimeric' organisms since they have sectors of cells with different genotypes. In some plants and fungi tissue from the "mutant" sector may be grown into a whole reproducing organism; some of our better apple varieties arose from mutant sectors on a tree. Somatic mutations in animals can lead to cancer when genes that regulate cell division are mutated. germline mutations: mutations in the cells that produce gametes; these are inherited in successive generations, so are or primary concern to genetics.

Mutation induction has been accepted as a useful tool in plant breeding programs to provide maximum inheritable variability.  In present study, role of three chemical mutagens [Ethyl Methan solfonate (140 mM), Sodium Azide (2 mM) and a combination treatment of Methyl Nitros ourea+ Sodium Azide (30 mM+2 mM)] for creating variability in Tarrom Mahali cultivar have been investigated.  The measured...

Improvement in the sensitivity of DNA polymerase I-deficient Escherichia coli for detecting mutagens and carcinogens.

The sensitivity of a polA strain to the antibacterial activity of mutagens and carcinogens may be increased by inserting one or both of the following characteristics, a lexA mutation or the R391 bacterial plasmid. The effects of the lexA mutation and the plasmid appear to be additive. The differential sensitivity of a polA lexA (R391) strain could be adapted as a preliminary screening test for ...

An improved bacterial test system for the detection and classification of mutagens and carcinogens.

We previously described a set of four strains of Salmonella typhimurium designed for detecting the various types of mutagens, and showed their utility in detecting a wide variety of carcinogens as mutagens. The lipopolysaccharide that normally coats these bacteria is a barrier to penetration of mutagens to the cell membrane. The set of tester strains has been improved by adding a mutation (rfa:...

A new Salmonella tester strain (TA102) with A X T base pairs at the site of mutation detects oxidative mutagens.

A new tester strain, TA102, is described as an addition to the set of strains for the Salmonella/microsome mutagenicity test. This strain contains A X T base pairs at the site of the mutation (determined by DNA sequence analysis) in contrast to the other Salmonella tester strains that detect mutagens damaging G X C base pairs. This strain differs from previous tester strains in that the mutatio...

Carcinogens are mutagens: their detection and classification.

We detect mutagens by using a special set of bacterial tester strains. We have described our test system for mutagen and carcinogen detection in a series of recent papers. I will give here only a summary of some of these results, omitting references to other work, which is credited in our original papers. A simple procedure for combining human (or rat) liver for carcinogen activation and the ba...
